The Official Route and the Extended Route
The BHF London to Brighton 2024 official distance is 54 miles. I finished that in 4 hours 7 minutes, then continued to Shoreham and extended up the Downs Link to Christ's Hospital.
Total: 76.3 miles in 6 hours 33 minutes with one stop.
The extension was not unplanned. The decision to continue beyond the official finish was made based on the data available at that point: physiological load was within the 80% ceiling, the Lag Factor projection was manageable, and the conditions were holding. When those three criteria are met, continuing is the correct decision.
Comparing 2023 and 2024
In June 2023 I rode the same event for the first time in 4 hours 45 minutes, six months after ending 19 years in a wheelchair. In 2024 I rode it in 4 hours 7 minutes and extended to 76.3 miles. The improvement is not dramatic. It is consistent. Consistency is the metric.
The Downs Link extension added 22 miles of mixed-surface gravel terrain after the official event finish. Gravel surfaces place different demands on joints that sublux and dislocate routinely. The additional load was accounted for and managed within the existing framework.
